Brevard County History
Recent and Present Day Happenings
Friday August 18, 2017
World War II marked the beginnings of modern Brevard County and the escalation of population, commerce and industry as we know about today. It's difficult for us to imagine how remote and sparsly populated Brevard County was before December 7, 1941 when Japan invaded the United States and congress approved funding for the Banana River Naval Station where present day Patrick Air Force Base is located. The money from the war funded jobs and industry to supply the war effort and protect the Florida shoreline from invasion.
After the war, the Space Center was brought in and the insuing Space Race with the Soviet Union excellerated growth quickly in Brevard and we became the Space Coast as men went to the moon and launched into orbit.
Recent times and history from the settlement of pioneers to the present day happenings in Brevard County, Florida. The space boom from the Gemini/Mercury to Apollo and the Space Shuttle and beyond to Space X.
